Non-pharmaceutical measures that are effective in containing the spread of Covid-19 can also be used to minimize the spread of the flu.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said these and other measures, including social distancing, coughing into your elbows, and staying home when you are sick, are effective.
Dr. Morgan Mkhatshwa, director of operations at the Bonitas Medical Fund, recommends getting the flu shot to reduce the risk of serious infection.
“Influenza viruses spread very quickly from person to person. Even if the flu vaccine isn’t 100% effective against the current strain of flu, it reduces your risk of getting the flu and if you do get it, it will be milder,” Mkhatshwa said.
He said Die Vaccination is also effective at protecting those around you.
“By getting the flu shot, you’re protecting others who may be more vulnerable: babies, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. As with Covid-19, the more people get vaccinated, the closer we get to ‘herd immunity’.”
