The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 5,920 new Covid-19 cases in SA on Thursday.
159 new deaths were reported, of which 51 occurred in the last 24 to 48 hours This brought the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 92,989.
“Due to the ongoing review by the National Health Department, there may be a backlog in reported Covid-19 deaths,” the NICD said.< /p>
The number of laboratory-confirmed cases in SA is now 3,546,808, with the recent increase representing a 14.3% positivity rate.
“The majority of today’s new cases are from Western Cape (25%) followed by Gauteng (20%), KwaZulu-Natal with 19%, Eastern Cape and Limpopo with 9% each, Mpumalanga and North West with 5% each and Free State and Northern Cape with 5% each for 4 % of today’s new cases.
“There was an increase of 293 hospitalizations in the last 24 hours ” said the NICD.
