The Independent Police Department (Ipid) is investigating the death of a Durban man found hanged in a police cell after being temporarily detained for allegedly being unruly and refusing to wear a face mask.
Ipid spokeswoman Grace Langa said the incident took place Tuesday evening at the Inanda Police Station community service center.
Langa said the 25-year-old man walked in and said he wanted to kill his relatives because she had attacked him.
“The man could not be asked to get his details and the full story as he was uncontrollable.”
Langa said he did allegedly refused to wear a mask, acted strangely and was unruly.
“It is alleged that members succeeded in detaining him and detaining him in the makeshift cell for his refusal to wear a mask and a malfunction at the community service center. “
Langa said when police officers checked on him about 15 minutes later, he was found hanging on his belt.
” He was alone in the cell. He was pronounced dead by paramedics. “
Langa said Ipid investigators were visiting the scene.
Police spokesman Capt Nqobile Gwala said an investigation file had been opened.
“On September 7th, a 25-year-old man is said to have hanged himself in the police cells. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated, ”said Gwala.
