A 46-year-old police officer has been arrested for lying about losing his firearm and claiming he was robbed by three men.
In a statement Sunday, the Police Commissioner’s Office said of KwaZulu-Natal with reported that the man was charged with perjury and contempt of justice for the false allegation he made at Mariannhill Police Station on June 8.
“The suspect allegedly reported that that he was returning from work when he was approached by three unidentified men outside his home in Savanah Park. He was stopped by the suspects, who claimed his service pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition,” the statement said.
His statement was then assigned to an investigating officer who investigated the matter further.
“During the investigation, it was found that the man’s testimony contained contradictions. The applicant was questioned again and it was found that he had reported a false case.
“He was told that it was a criminal offense to make a false statement. The investigating officer found that he had lost his firearm and did not report the matter to his employer. He has been arrested and held at Mariannhill Police Station and will appear in Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday.”
The Provincial Commissioner appealed to the municipality not to open false cases.
” It is a criminal offense to lie under oath and those who do so will be faced with the full force of the law.”
