Lengthy jail term for man who attacked lesbian couple, killing one

A 57-year-old man from Sebokeng who assaulted and killed a lesbian couple last year will serve 25 years in prison for his crime.

The Pretoria High Court in Palm Ridge this week convicted Mojalefa Simon Mokoena of murdering 28-year-old Bonang Precious Gaelae.

“On February 12, 2021, the deceased and her partner Fracinah Mohanoe went to a tuck shop to buy airtime was in a yard owned by Mokoena,” said National Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Lumka Mahanjana.

She said the couple got into an altercation with Mokoena and he assaulted her.< /p>

The couple went to buy airtime elsewhere.

“When they left, Mokoena went to his house to get a knife and waited for them. Seeing her approach, he threw a brick at her, hitting Mohanoe. He proceeded to stab her and her partner,” Mahanjana said.

The couple were taken to a nearby hospital, where Gaelae was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mokoena was killed arrested the following day Mohanoe showed him to the police.

He has since been held in custody after failing to get bail.

Mokoena was sentenced to 25 years for first attempted first degree murder Sentenced to eight years of murder and five years for the two counts of assault.

The judge ordered that the sentences be imposed simultaneously.

Sibongile Mzinyathi, head of the Nordgauteng prosecutor’s office, expressed her gratitude of the community for the role they played.

Mzinyathi hopes this phrase sends a message that hate crimes will not be tolerated.
