Social Cohesion Group representative Ravi Pillay says describing the deaths of 34 people in Phoenix during the July 2021 riots as a “massacre” is misleading and fueling racial divisions.

At their most recent meeting, the South African Commission on Human Rights (SAHRC) heard from Pillay.
He told the commission: “…the marking of The entire Phoenix community and the characterization of the events in Phoenix as a ‘massacre’ has demonized the entire Indian community because of the actions of a few.”
