More sluice gates opened at Vaal Dam to ease water pressure

Two more lock gates of the Vaal Dam were opened on Monday, bringing the number of open gates on the second largest dam in the country to four.

The decision to open the gates was made after heavy rains in the past few weeks when the dam’s capacity exceeded 108%.

“This decision was made as the Water and Wastewater Authority continues to monitor the high inflows that the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) and thus affect the Vaal Dam as one of 14 dams in the system “, said department spokesman Sputnik Ratau.

He warned farmers and communities downstream of the dam to” keep their equipment away from the expected strong currents “. < / p>

People shouldn’t take the risk of crossing low-lying bridges that could be flooded.

The department would monitor the weather and the inflows into the system, Ratau added.

The four lock gates would be as long as stay open if necessary.
