More than 70 people were arrested for public violence and looting during protests in Mangaung, Free State.
Protests against poor service performance increased earlier in the week and caused significant disruption to businesses, schools and the city Health Services.
“The police that were deployed in Mangaung to deal with disruptive measures have made additional arrests in the past 24 hours. It happened after foreign nationals’ stores were looted, some of which were badly damaged, “said police spokeswoman Brig Motantsi Makhele.

” There were other protests reported in areas such as Soutpan, Dewetsdorp and Zastron, “said Makhele.
” During the protests in Zastron, about 20 people were arrested for public violence and looting. “
The areas were quieter on Wednesday morning, Makhele said, adding that police were monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, a 57-year-old security guard was arrested after the death of the 15-year-old Liam Siegel, a 7th grade student at Heide Elementary School, was due to appear in the Bloemfontein District Court on Wednesday.
Makhele said the security guard allegedly fired a shot an offer Detering protesters in a warehouse.
“There will be a group of demonstrators who were arrested on Sunday and Monday respectively. So we appear in court today.
” We appeal again to those criminal elements who continue to raid the shops and barricade the streets to prevent this from happening as we now consider their behavior as pure crime. “
