A 31-year-old mother and her two children, a four-year-old son and a five-year-old girl, died shortly after midnight in a shack fire in Klarinet in Emalahleni.< p>Mpumalanga Police Spokesman Brig Selvy Mohlala said the 35-year-old father was not home at the time of the fire.
“It is said the mother could have a stove with two burners on and it is believed that the family used the stove to warm themselves as it was cold. Other allegations are that the mother fell asleep while the stove was still on,” he said.
“The hut caught fire and was engulfed in flames in which the mother and two minors were . The three could not be rescued and were unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.”
Mohlala said police in the province are concerned about incidents where children have been killed in fires. “The two incidents unfortunately happened within about four days as this follows one that occurred in Hendrina on July 4 when two sets of twins died.”
Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has the family offered its condolences and urged the public to stay warm this winter.
