A prison guard was killed in a botched money transport robbery on the East Rand on Friday, injuring his wife and two children.
The G4S security van drove down Van Dyk Street near Carnival City, when he was rammed from the back by a Mercedes-Benz sedan, Lt-Col Robert Netshiunda told TimesLIVE.
“The money truck driver lost control and rolled over a private car,” he said.
The unnamed jailer who drove a private car was killed instantly.
His wife and two children were taken to the hospital, where their condition was stable, said Netshiunda.
“It’s very tragic,” he said. “It happened at 6:00 pm and they [the family] were on their way home.”
The G4S guards suffered minor injuries.
Two spent cartridges were found at the scene. The robbers apparently shot in the air to intimidate the guards trapped in the van.
“But they couldn’t get the money,” said Netshiunda, adding that the would-be robbers had the wrecked Mercedes at the scene and fled in an Audi and a Golf.
The Mercedes was reported stolen in Jeppe in December.
There were no arrests.
