Murder of corrections officials shows minister must prioritise safety: PSA

Lawlessness has reached unprecedented levels and law enforcement officers are no longer feared by criminals, the Public Servants Association (PSA) said on Wednesday.

The PSA said so as they described the “pointless and barbaric” Murder of two correctional officers from the municipality of Boksburg in Duduza on Tuesday.

“It is well documented that DCS is severely understaffed, resulting in continued violent attacks on corrections officers by inmates,” said the union, which represents more than 14,000 DCS workers.

“The PSA cannot stand by and see these workers attacked unless DCS does something to strengthen their facility and provide correctional officers with the necessary safety equipment be equipped.

The PSA called on Justice and Corrections Secretary Ronald Lamola to prioritize the safety of correctional officers by ensuring that the DCS are adequately staffed and equipped to perform their duties , is adequately equipped.

“The PSA sends its sincere condolences to the families and colleagues of the two correctional officers who paid the ultimate price in the performance of their duties. DCS is recommended to ensure that necessary support is offered to officers’ families and colleagues.”
