The occupants of a fully loaded taxi burned to death in a nine-car pile-up on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
Schawn Herbst, spokesman for Netcare 911, said paramedics arrived shortly after 3am reports were received of a collision on the southbound carriageway between the Peter Brown and Chatterton Road exits in Pietermaritzburg.
“Two trucks, a bakkie, a minibus and five other cars were reportedly involved in a collision, which burst into flames into a fully loaded taxi,” he said.
“By the time rescue workers arrived on the scene, the fire had spread to other vehicles and engulfed the taxi and all its occupants.”
Herbst said another collision occurred on the north side of the road while rescue efforts were underway.
“It is not yet known how many occupants were in the taxi at the time, but they unfortunately did all wu “We’re being burned,” he said.
“Several other motorists were injured and are receiving medical treatment from several emergency services workers, and an official number is yet to be determined.”< /p>
