Off-duty Durban cop killed while trying to stop hijacking outside daughter’s school

An off-duty Durban police officer was killed trying to stop a kidnapping outside his daughter’s school in Umbilo on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Col Athlenda Mathe said all resources were being mobilized to stop the Arrest suspect who killed Warrant Officer Michael Jameson.

“Warrant Officer Michael Jameson, 52, was picking up his daughter from a school in Umbilo at around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when he realized that a kidnapping was in progress. The member immediately volunteered and responded to the incident.

“When the suspects saw that the member was armed, they opened fire. The member returned fire but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on the spot,” said Mathe.

Two vehicles, one in front of the school in Umbilo and the other in Hammersdale, were found abandoned.

< p>“This is after the couple collided both vehicles while avoiding arrest,” Mathe said.

General Fannie Masemola, commissioner of the National SA Police Service, said police were working around the p.m. to apprehend the suspects.

“The late Warrant Officer died a hero dying to serve and protect the people of this land. Indeed, he served with pride as he dedicated himself to ministry and put the safety of his community before his own. Let me take this opportunity to thank the deceased member.

“The bell rang. Thank you for your service and your commitment to serve and protect. We will not rest until the late member’s killers are tracked down and arrested to answer for this callous act,” he said.
