Police say the shooting at a tavern in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night, which killed four and injured eight, was an accidental act.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Nqobile Gwala , said the diners were at a tavern in Sweetwaters when two men opened fire on them at around 8:30 p.m.
“A vehicle arrived and parked in front of the tavern. Two men jumped out of the vehicle, entered the tavern and fired random shots at the patrons.
“A total of 12 people were shot dead. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and the other two died in hospital.
“Another eight people remain in hospital after sustaining injuries. The suspects fled the scene after the incident.”
Gwala said the victims were between the ages of 30 and 45.
“Charges of murder and attempted murder have been transferred to Plessislaer SAPS for investigation opened. The file has been forwarded to the Provincial Organized Crime Unit, which will take over the investigation.”
