The Independent Police Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a man during a violent protest in the northwest on Friday.
Ipid spokeswoman Grace Langa said trucks and shops were burned down during the protest and the police reportedly fired shots at demonstrators.
“Ipid is investigating a death as a result of police actions,” said Langa.
“It is alleged that members of the community from Lichtenburg protested around 4 am yesterday in the morning, trucks burned and shops attacked. It is alleged that police fired shots at the protesters and one of the shots hit Ishmael Moerane Mafikeng on the right side of his chest at around 8:20 am on the side of the road and took him to General De La Rey Memorial Hospital . But he was dead when he arrived.
“It is alleged that Ishmael was not one of the demonstrators. Ipid was called to the crime scene and reconstructed the crime scene,” said Langa.
” Ipi d gathered evidence and testimony and spoke to the deceased’s mother, Dina Mofokeng. An autopsy will be carried out on Monday.
“Ipid has not yet identified the police suspect as this is determined by the results of the autopsy. The investigation is ongoing. ”
