POLL | Should all midweek public holidays be moved to become long weekends?

The CEO of low-cost airline FlySafair has reportedly written to Parliament proposing to amend the law on public holidays to allow public holidays on Monday and Friday.

According to Business Insider, the company said South Africans are more likely to travel on long weekends rather than bank holidays that occur during the week.

FlySafair said the company’s passenger traffic increased more than 20% on long weekends on eThekwini during the last long weekend on Heritage Day. < / p>

SA has 12 public holidays listed in the Public Holidays Act. The law states that if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday should be Be a holiday.

FlySafair CEO Elmar Conradie said the proposal aims to boost travel and tourism and give the industry a much-needed boost in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and travel lockers that were introduced in March last year.

Conradie said the weekday days were e days of observance.

“Our goal would be to look at how the time off from the work can be better used to help the tourism industry and encourage South Africans to travel again. These are unprecedented times and so require new ways of thinking. We believe our proposal provides the government with a new idea to stimulate economic growth and recovery in the country as a whole, “said Conradie.

Since SA is locked under Alert 1, local and international travel is allowed. According to the published regulations, international travelers must present a valid certificate for a negative Covid-19 test 72 hours before departure.
