Thursday’s arrest of lawyer Malesela Teffo, representing four of the five men accused of murdering former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, worried many , who followed the process, for raised eyebrows.
Meyiwa was gunned down in October 2014 in Vosloorus at the home of his girlfriend and mother of his child Kelly Khumalo.
Teffo did it arrested in Pretoria High Court on Thursday, apparently for failing to appear in court in Hillbrow on a separate matter.
His appointed counsel, Tshepo Thobane, told the attorney of the arrest came as no surprise as they were made aware during the court’s lunch hour that it was going to happen. He said it was an intimidation tactic in response to the lawyer’s revelation that the crime scene was contaminated.
Thobane said Teffo’s arrest in court constituted a contempt and the Attorney should decide if he wants to take legal action.
“This is contempt of court. You cannot arrest anyone in the courtroom, whether the presiding officer is present or not. This is contempt of court and deserves a civil action.
“Teffo has to decide whether to sue or not. The fact is that he was arrested in front of the people, in front of the media. Everyone in the country has now seen videos of the lawyer being arrested in the courthouse, in a courtroom – this is pure contempt of court,” he said.
Teffo< span>accused Police Minister Bheki Cele of being involved in his arrest.
However, the minister denied this in an interview witheNCA. He said he heard about the arrest when his spokesman Lirandzu Themba briefed him on Thursday afternoon.
Themba said the minister had a full report from the national Police requested commissioner about Teffo’s arrest and the way it was handled by the police.
