President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend Wednesday’s mass funeral for 21 teenagers who died on June 26 in an east London tavern.
The Enyobeni tavern in Scenery Park has since closed.
At least 17 guests – almost all of them minors – died under mysterious circumstances at the venue. Others were taken to the hospital, where four others died.
The cause of death has not yet been determined.
After the incident, Daily Dispatch reported that lifeless bodies lay on the tavern floor while others slumped in chairs and tables as if they had collapsed in the middle of a conversation.
Ramaphosa’s office said he was being assisted by Eastern Cape Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane and provincial and local government officials to help the people to comfort families of the deceased.
The mass funeral service will take place at the sports field in Scenery Park starting at 9 am.
Some of the families have chosen to have their children buried privately.< /p>
