The public prosecutor has appointed Health Minister Dr. Joe Phaahla to repeal the ordinance requiring mask-wearing in schools.
“Prosecutors have long called for this irrational ordinance to be scrapped, as several South African health experts have repeatedly stated that the risks of the Mandate for learners outweighs any potential benefits,” DA Shadow Education Minister Baxolile Nodada said in a statement.
Nodada said after regulations to deal with Covid-19 outside the Disaster Management Act were released on Wednesday, Prof Shabir Madhi, professor of vaccinology at Wits University, reiterated the risks of the mandate for students and the irrationality of Covid-19 regulations in general.
She said Madhi has also previously stated mask mandates in SA have not had a significant impact in deterring the spread of Covid-19.
“If the ANC government continues its exercise of irrational vor If she wants to continue writing, she needs to inform Parliament and the public SA with the scientific evidence on which to base decisions on regulations,” Nodada said.
Nodada said data showed that children have a much lower risk of serious illness and that the psychological effects of wearing masks could be more harmful.
