SA has reached another grim Covid-19 milestone, with the country now recording more than 85,000 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases announced on Monday reported that there were 125 Covid-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the pandemic outbreak in South Africa in March 2020 to 85,002.
In the past, 2,640 new Covid-19 Cases registered 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 2,860,835.
Of the new cases, 864 were in the Eastern Cape and 601 in KwaZulu-Natal. N o other provinces exceeded the 500 mark for daily new infections, with the Free State recording 258, the Western Cape 240 and the North Cape 229. Gauteng recorded only 150 new infections.
The number of people now hospitalized with Covid-19-related illnesses also fell to almost less than 10,000. This after there had been 163 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours, making a total of 10,140 people.
