SA should not rush its transition away from coal, says Gwede Mantashe

South Africa must systematically manage its transition from coal-based power generation and must not rush to switch to renewable energy sources, said Mining and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe on Thursday.

“I am not saying coal forever … I am saying “Let’s make our transition step by step instead of being emotional,” said Mantashe at a mining conference when asked how China’s commitment not to build new coal-fired power plants overseas would affect South Africa.

< p> “We’re not a developed economy – we don’t all have alternative sources,” he added.
