SANDF deployed to Gauteng as COVID piles pressure on hospitals

Desperate times have called for the most desperate measures in Gauteng: SANDF medics have now been given the green-light to operate in the province, as health officials scramble to find more hospital beds for sick patients.

Gauteng third wave latest – hospitals ‘struggling to cope’

The trajectory of Gauteng’s third wave is frightening. It’s already surpassing the peak of the last two surges, and more than 60% of new cases in South Africa are being registered in the small, but densely-populated region.

CSIR researcher Ridhwaan Suliman has laid out the cold hard facts of the matter on his Twitter page. The data paints a grim picture, as new cases continue to soar on a near-vertical path. Gauteng is, indeed, entering ‘uncharted territory’.

SANDF sent in to treat COVID-19 patients

That’s why SANDF has been drafted in to help. Infamously, they were deployed to the streets of SA during our first lockdown to ensure law and order were maintained. On this occasion, their medics are taking centre stage. Meanwhile, Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane also condemned those who are still taking part in mass gatherings.

“Gauteng is becoming an area that we’re becoming very concerned about. People still participating in protests, still participating in gatherings are a problem – You’re risking not only your life, but also the lives of your loved ones.”

“We are appealing to residents, let’s save the lives of South Africans…the health practitioners are under pressure. What we have decided after meeting with the President and the Ministry of Defence is that the military has been deployed to the province. What this will do is to assist with the capacity of the beds, they will help us with human capacity.”
