Sars customs officer in court for corruption after ‘demanding bribe’

A customs officer from the SA Revenue Service (Sars), who appeared before Upington Magistrates’ Court on Friday on corruption charges, was released on R2,000 bail.

Lebohang Matthew Theane, 44, is charged R8,000 for the release of a vehicle seized by Sars in Kakamas in November last year.

It is alleged that on 2 November a van belonging to the applicant’s uncle was seized by the Sars Customs Department.

The complainant claimed that he contacted the Sars officer to have the van released.

The officer then allegedly demanded R8,000 for his release .

“The applicant contacted the police and a covert operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) was launched. The defendant was arrested on April 29,” said National Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

The case has been postponed to June 2.
