Senzo Meyiwa trial: Advocate says forced confessions were obtained from two of his clients

The lawyer defending four of the accused in Senzo Meyiwa’s murder trial says he will file a formal request for a trial within a trial after arguing in the Pretoria High Court on Friday that the rights of his clients were injured.

“I challenge the state to say that we cannot proceed until we have a trial within a trial and make sure my clients have not been wrongly charged,” said attorney Malesela Teffo.

He said continuing to cross-examine coroner Sgt. Thabo Mosia would be a futile endeavor.

He claimed that confessions were made by two of his clients under duress and as his clients Appearing before a Boksburg court in 2020, they were not adequately informed of the allegations against them.

“Your constitutional rights have been violated. When they showed up in Boksburg, they were not charged or given the reason why they had to go to court. It was there that South Africans first saw the accused refusing to enter the accused box,” Teffo said.

He claimed they were being made a scapegoat to avoid arresting the right people.< /p>

“The state has nothing connecting my clients to the charges other than the coerced confessions obtained after extreme assaults,” Teffo said.

The confessions were not obtained submitted by the state to court.

Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela ruled that the trial will continue on Friday.

Teffo’s formal application is expected to be filed next week.
