South and central Durban beaches reopen

Shark nets have been reinstalled and serviced, leading to the reopening of Durban’s central and southern beaches on Wednesday.

The shark nets could not be serviced during the city riot last week.

The eThekwini community said the beaches north of the Umgeni Estuary to the uThongathi River will remain closed due to pollution in the Umhlanga Estuary.

“The public will be informed when it is safe to close beaches use in the north of the city “, said the community spokeswoman Lindiwe Khuzwayo.

On Wednesday the Umgeni Bird Park and the Mitchell Park Zoo reopened.

” The community thanks the public for the generous donations of food that we received in order to preserve the animals in these facilities during the riots. The facilities are no longer accepting donations as more than enough feed has been received for animals.

“The surplus will be shared with similar facilities,” said Khuzwayo.
