Stellenbosch University academics named as highly cited researchers

Stellenbosch University (SU) says that three of its academics were named highly cited researchers according to the Web of Science Group’s 2021 List of Highly Cited Researchers published on Tuesday.

Professors Oonsie Biggs (cross- fields), Umezuruike Linus Opara (agricultural sciences) and Dave Richardson (environment and ecology) are among the world’s most cited researchers.

Biggs holds the DSI / NRF Research Chair for Social Ecology and Resilience at the Center for Complex Systems in Transition.

Opara holds the DSI-NRF SA Research Chair in Post-Harvest Technology, while Richardson is Director of the DSI-NRF Center of Excellence in Invasive Biology and Professor in the Department of Botany and Zoology.

” This award from three of our top researchers recognizes the quality and impact of their research. The SU is very proud of this achievement, “said Prof. Eugene Cloete, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at the SU.

The list identifies scholars and social scientists who have authored several publications in the top rankings 1% after citations for their subject area and year of publication, which shows a significant research influence among their colleagues.

This year’s list contains 6,602 highly cited researchers from more than 70 countries and regions in 21 scientific and social sciences.

The university said Biggs, Opara and Richardson are in distinguished society alongside 24 Nobel Prize winners, including five this year.
