Suspect who allegedly shot undercover metro cop is arrested after negotiations with his family

A suspect believed to have shot and killed an undercover Metro Joburg cop on duty in Hillbrow has been arrested after negotiations with his family.

The man, who fled to KwaZulu-Natal, surrendered finally himself on Wednesday at Hillbrow police station.

JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla said they later found the suspect worked for a security firm in Johannesburg, which then communicated with his family. The family then confronted him and persuaded him to turn himself in to the police.

“Negotiations were held with the suspect’s family…worked hand-in-hand with the police to arrest the suspect, he said.

The officer was shot dead at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday while conducting crime prevention patrols.

“Undercover officers spotted eight suspicious men standing in front of a Buildings on Claim Street between Puke and Puke stood Esselen Street,” Fihla said.

He said police activated the flashing lights on their vehicle, approached tactically and demanded that the men be searched. During the search, a man ran away.

“Officials gave chase and during the pursuit, the man shot at the officers. One officer was shot and sustained injuries to his chest and hip. The suspect dropped his firearm and fled the scene.

The officer was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Fihla said the suspect was charged with attempted murder and is likely to appear in court soon.

JMPD chief Thulani Khanyile and some staff visited the injured officer on Wednesday.

“We left to see him, he is very positive about his recovery, which is going well. He is currently in ICU but should be transferred to the general ward soon,” Fihla said.
