Three suspects have been arrested after they were allegedly caught stealing copper cables at an Eskom power plant in Kriel, Mpumalanga, police said.
Police spokesman Brig Selvy Mohlala said the suspects were allegedly 22 and 42 years old broke into the Matla power plant on Wednesday evening.
“While they [the police] were searching, four suspects ran out of a container and shot at the police and a shootout ensued between the suspects, police and security personnel.
“The suspects fled but were later found by police hiding in a truck parked on the premises and they were arrested,” said Mohlala.
He said one suspect was taken to the hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
