Three found with explosives near Zim-SA border, link to ATM crime under investigation

Three people, including a woman, have been arrested after they were found in possession of commercial explosives near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo, police said.

Police spokeswoman Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said, the two men and a woman were spotted by members of the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) as they crossed the border from Zimbabwe into South Africa with a backpack and two panniers.

Mojapelo said the trio were caught and taken to Musina police station and their luggage was searched.

He said the Musina explosives team found six coils of detonating cords, 50 units of plug-capped fuses and 65 units of explosive shells.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lt-General Thembi Hadebe commended the teams for making the arrests so quickly.

“In the past, explosives of this type have been found to have been used in ATM bombings in some places in the province, and arresting these suspects may help the police in stopping this crime,” Hadebe said.

T The three, aged between 31 and 33, are expected to be married soon appear before the Municipal Court of Musina.
