Three suspected robbers were killed and a fourth suspect arrested after a shootout with police in Sandton.
Police spokeswoman Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said members of the CID are tracking information about suspects who committed kidnappings and armed robberies in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, at times using vehicles equipped with flashing lights.
Masondo said the team was on the lookout for suspects around 7pm on Wednesday when they saw a Ford Figo carrying four people spotted occupants traveling around Bramley.
He said police tried to stop the vehicle but the suspects opened fire and sped away.
“It came to a gunfight and a high-speed chase. On Marlboro Drive, the suspect’s car lost control and hit the wall. All suspects jumped out of the car and the shooting continued.
“Three of the suspects were fatally injured and one was arrested at the scene.”
He said police recovered three unlicensed firearms with ammunition and a blue LED light.
The vehicle was hijacked in Bramley earlier this month.
Police in Lanseria arrested five men last week, one of whom they believed they were responsible for car hijackings and armed robberies around Gauteng.
