A tire blown thwarted an escape attempt by five suspects who had led police on a high-speed chase from Westbury to Florida, west of Johannesburg, over the weekend.
Gauteng spokeswoman Brig Brenda Muridili said the Police patrol came across an Audi Q5. “When the occupants of the Audi noticed the police vehicle, one of them opened fire on the police and the driver sped away.”
The police chased them.
The high speed The chase ended up on the corner of Nadine and Albertina Sisulu streets in Florida when the Audi came to a halt after a tire blowout, she said.
“The suspects tried to shoot their way out, but the police fought back.”
Three suspects were arrested, one fled on foot while the other was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police officers were unharmed.
The Police seized a firearm that was later discovered to have been stolen in De Deur in January. Muridili said it will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in other violent crimes.
The arrested suspects will be profiled to determine if this the case has been involved in other serious and violent crimes.
