Former public protector Thuli Madonsela is not giving up the fight to expand the Social Aid in Need (SRD) grant.
The monthly grant of R350 was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last year to help those affected The grant was made available by the National Treasury to extend through late April, and Madonsela has joined calling for renewed renewal.
When she went to Twitter, she said the grant would be paid should “until a permanent solution is found”.
She also called for the politicians’ “perks” to be abolished and the funds used for the emergency grant.
“There is no other basis than that that are granted to the colonial and apartheid rulers themselves. In accordance with our egalitarian constitution, if we tighten our belts to pay for necessities like the R350 emergency grant, some of these benefits will have to disappear, ”she said.
Last month, Madonsela urged her supporters to sign a petition asking Ramaphosa to extend and increase the grant until it is converted into Basic Income Support.
