Thuli Madonsela weighs in on Zandile Christmas Mafe’s arrest

Former public protector Thuli Madonsela has campaigned for alleged parliamentary arsonist Zandile Christmas Mafe to obtain a private attorney>

Mafe was investigated on Sunday in connection with the fire that devastated parliament, arrested.

He appeared in the Cape Town District Court on Tuesday, where he was represented by attorney Luvuyo Godla on a pro bono basis. His case has been postponed until January 11 for further investigation.

He will be charged with burglary, theft, arson, and other charges under the National Key Points Act.

Madonsela questioned Mafe’s ability to find a private lawyer so quickly.

“I was wondering how it was possible to quickly arrange a private attorney for the homeless Zandile Mafe, which would release him from state legal aid if a confession was threatened, “she said.

” I’m curious about what those who are 100% sure that he is innocent, you know we don’t know. ”

Madonsela said the fire in Parliament was strategic and needed urgent attention.

“These fires – too many of them in strategic locations – an unpleasant coincidence that deserves urgent attention,” she said.

< p> earlier this week Godla dismissed reports that his client was homeless and said Mafe lived in Khayelits ha, location B.

“He is a person with a permanent address. He’s been in the Western Cape for more than six years, ”said Godla.

Godla said Mafe was a“ poor man ”and he didn’t get a“ cent ”. for representing him.

“What made me defend this guy is that he raised his hand,” said Godla. < span> “He has no assets but that doesn’t make him an escape risk.”

He said Mafe was a “scapegoat” for the failure of the executive and legislative branches. < / span>

“How would this person get access to Parliament and how would they know where to go in Parliament and burn [the building]? He’s clearly a scapegoat. This is one Failure of the executive and the legislature, not the poor man, “said Godla.
