Two officers from the Boksburg Municipal Correctional Facility were shot dead in Duduza in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday morning.
Justice and Corrections Minister Ronald Lamola said the two officers, named Mr Faku and Mr Moliki, were killed around 7.45am am when they tracked down a parole officer who had escaped. A government firearm was stolen from one of the officers.
“The tremendous sense of loss is compounded by the tragic circumstances in which such a violent attack was unleashed against our officers. I would like to offer my heartfelt and deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and the correctional officers,” Lamola said.
Lamola said the Department and police will be doing everything they can to investigate the crime.
