A Standerton woman and her 12-year-old nephew died after falling into a corn silo, Mpumalanga Police said on Sunday.
The incident happened on Friday evening.
” According to the report, the boy somehow fell into the corn silo at the Groenvlei farm near Standerton on that horrible day. His aunt Jackie Rautenbach then tried to pull him out but fell in too,” Brigg Selvy Mohlala said.
“The woman’s husband, who was a few yards away, reportedly heard loud calls for help and rushed closer to the scene of the crime, but unfortunately it was too late to save her life. Unfortunately, when paramedics arrived, they were both found dead,” added Mohlala.
An investigation file has since been opened, but police indicated there was no suspicion of foul play.
< p>The late wife and boy have been identified as Jackie and Kerneels Rautenbach.
Kerneels was a pupil at Laerskool Standerton.
The school paid tribute to him and his aunt on their Facebook Page.

You will always be remembered for the handsome boy with the most beautiful heart. Our Stannies will miss you. rest in peace kernels Heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Rautenbach family.
The school said of Jackie, “Our Stannies extend our heartfelt condolences to the Rautenbach family on the death of Jackie Rautenbach. Jackie was the mother of one of our 5th graders. rest in peace jackie They were so brave.”
Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela of the Mpumalanga Police Department expressed her sadness at the incident.
